Understanding the Water Rate Changes
The City of Ontario recently approved changes to water rates. We understand that any increase can raise questions, so we want to provide residents with some perspective on how Ontario’s water rates compare with other communities. The charts below show residential water bills in Ontario compared with other nearby communities. They are provided to help customers better understand what water service costs in our community and how those costs compare with others. Even with the approved increases, Ontario's residential water rates are projected to remain lower than the other communities included in the study. It is important to remember that every community and water system is different, so these comparisons are intended to provide general perspective.

What Does the Rate Increase Help Pay For?
Water rates don't just pay for the water that comes out of the tap. They help pay for the entire system needed to treat, store and deliver that water to our community every day. Ontario's water system includes approximately 96 miles of water lines and serves about 4,400 water accounts.
Over the next several years, the City is planning significant improvements to maintain and strengthen that system. The City's Capital Improvement Plan identifies nearly $29 million in water system projects through 2035, including repairs and replacement of existing infrastructure as well as improvements needed for the future.
The additional revenue will help the city maintain and repair existing infrastructure, replace aging equipment, complete major water projects, cover increasing operating costs, and maintain adequate reserves for the water system. The financial plan is designed to make sure there is enough funding for both day-to-day operations and long-term improvements.

The rate plan also helps position the city to use grants and lower-interest funding for major projects rather than relying entirely on higher-cost debt.
