About the Project
Over that last decade the United States has seen roadway fatalities increase after a 30-year downward trend. In response, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) adopted the Safe System Approach that promotes safer design, roads, vehicles, and related policies to reduce mistakes and the severity of crashes. You can learn more about the Safe System Approach here.
Alongside adopting the Safe System Approach, the USDOT established the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program, which provides funds for communities to develop safety action plans to reduce fatalities and serious injuries resulting from crashes. This program is funding this plan. Once this plan is completed, the City of Ontario will be eligible to apply for funding to build projects identified in the plan.
Ontario’s plan will analyze serious-injury and fatality data, community input, and industry best practices to identify needed improvements to the city’s transportation system.

Plan Objectives
- Prioritize preventing fatal and serious injury crashes to protect the lives of Ontario’s residents, visitors, and businesses, thereby improving overall community well-being.
- Raise community awareness about transportation safety, gather diverse perspectives on current challenges, and shape a plan that aligns with the community’s needs.
- Utilize the Transportation Safety Action Plan to seek federal and state grant funding and to make the best and most efficient use of limited city resources to improve safety for all road users.
