Project Description
The City of Ontario applied for and was awarded a grant from Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Safe Route to School (SRTS) Program. The SRTS project will install new attached and detached concrete sidewalks adjacent to existing streets and ADA pedestrian ramps for street crossings located near existing schools.
The new sidewalk and pedestrian ramp improvements will be used by students and pedestrians for walking and biking to school. These routes were identified as high priority projects by the City of Ontario and School District Administrators because of their frequent use and required safety from traffic. The work involves detailed planning, surveying, engineering, and construction management.

Current Activities
Atlas Land Surveying mailed a letter to property owners in the project locations requesting right-of-entry per Oregon Code. Surveying will occur beginning the week of 4/12/21 and will last for approximately 3-4 weeks. A preliminary plan of each project area is shown in the link above. The project is currently in design by Jacobs Engineering. The preliminary 50% design and 50% cost estimate were started in August, completed, and submitted to the City of Ontario on September 6, 2021. There is a follow up meeting the week of September 13th with the City and Public Works Department to address plan review comments. The next internal milestones are the 90% design submittal in October 2021 with the final 100% design completed in December 2021.
Estimated Project Schedule
Community Outreach
As part of the ODOT Grant, the city has also developed a Community Outreach Plan and schedule which will start in September. It includes press releases to the general community, flyer notification to residents within the construction areas, and educational materials (newsletters and backpack mail) to students in the Ontario School District 8C community.
