The Ontario Fire and Rescue Department protects 18,000 people living in an area of just under 100 square miles.

Firefighters extricate a roll-over victim

The department consists of ten paid professionals on staff, 30 volunteer professionals, and one part-time secretary a total of 41 personnel.

The department, ISO-rated 3, covers the city of Ontario, and contracts with the Ontario Rural Fire Department and the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office to provide rural fire protection and Hazardous Material Emergency response in the surrounding region.

The department provides Quick Response/EMT medical response; dispatch is handled through the area’s 911 service.

The department has 12 vehicles, including a 90-foot aerial platform truck and a Haz-Mat unit.

Hazardous Materials (HazMat) decontamination

The department is responsible for issuing burning permits and inspecting residential burn barrels. It also is responsible for checking the fire safety precautions of new construction.

During 2002, 79 percent of the calls were medical, while 20 percent were structure or non-structure fires; the remaining 1 percent was Hazardous Material incidents.
