The City Council is composed of a Mayor and six Councilors, elected from the city at large. Elections are conducted on a non-partisan basis, and each member is elected to serve a 4-year term.  Following an election, the Council will elect a President to conduct the meeting in the absence of the Mayor.

Each member of the Council is also appointed as a liaison to an external committee, commission, or board, such as the Planning Commission or Parks and Recreation Board. These appointments are reviewed each January following an election.

The City Council meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Meetings begin at 7:00 pm in the Council Chambers of Ontario City Hall. If a second Council meeting is needed, it will be held on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Further, the Council conducts study sessions on the Thursday prior to a Council meeting, to discuss items on the agenda. These sessions begin at 12:00, and are also held in the Council Chamber of City Hall.

For example: The Council meeting in January, 2017, will be held on Tuesday, January 17th; The work session for that meeting will be held on Thursday, January 5th; Should a second meeting be needed, it will be held on Tuesday, January 31st.
